Get ready for SPRING!  February is for PLANNING!

For vegetable gardens, make lists of which varieties you'd like and make a layout in your garden to ensure you have enough room and optimal places for everything.

If you're planning on adding color beds, new landscaping, or trees, you can use February to create a design, construct the beds, and amend the soil.

Attention to your soil NOW, in the way of pre-emergent, will pay off in the spring and summer by preventing weeds such as crabgrass and sticker burrs.

Don't forget to pick up your 2016 Farmer's Almanac!
LAWNS:  Apply pre-emergent weed preventers, such as Balan, XL2G, or Amaze, to prevent those terrible spring/summer weeds.  Sandburs (aka sticker burrs) and crabgrass are best controlled with a combination of pre-emergent and careful attention to the desirable grass through fertilizer and watering.
TREES & SHRUBS:  Use dormant oil sprays to ward off insect problems such as scale.  This is a safe way to control insect issues on fruit and shade trees, shrubs around the yard, and other woody plants, without exposure to pesticides.   February is also a good time to plant new fruit trees, shade trees, and shrubs.
PLANT HARDY VEGGIES (OUTSIDE):  Onion sets, cold season vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, etc.
PLANT TENDER VEGGIES (SEEDS - START INSIDE!):  tomatoes & some herbs, peppers -  See our fabulous selection of Botanical Interests seeds.   Plan to begin setting out as transplants in late February through April, as long as you are able to protect from frost and wind damage!
PREPARE:  Potatoes - purchase, encourage eye growth, cut & get ready to plant outside starting on George Washington's birthday - Feb. 22.
