  • Looking for a corn-free and molasses-free horse feed?
  • Need a very low starch and sugar formula for your insulin-sensitive horse?
  • Looking for a premium quality, high roughage, low calorie feed which can  replace hay or grass in your horse's diet?
It's here!  The newly reformulated Purina Equine Adult is ALL of these things, and a great option for the easy keeper, active pleasure adult horse.  And because it's a complete feed with a high-quality forage built-in, you can be confident that your horse's entire ration is precisely balanced to meet his nutritional needs.
Why reformulate an already proven formula?  Market research indicated that a growing number of horse owners were looking for a complete (roughage-included) feed with no corn, no molasses, and low sugar/starch.   So, the Purina horse feed team took the best of the original Equine Adult (complete, moderately low starch/sugar for adult horses) and the best of the classic Horse Chow 100 (complete, low corn, minimal molasses, hay-replacement option) to create the new Purina Equine Adult.  The new formula is completely pelleted, like the Horse Chow 100.

Why would you consider replacing hay or forage in your horse's diet?  The Purina Equine Research team explains:

"Hay, pasture and grain vary considerably and can be inconsistent in nutritional value.  Of particular concern are deficits, excesses, and imbalances of calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, selenium, and Vitamin E.  Changes in weather, growing conditions, and agricultural practices can effect both quality and price.  Good hay may not be available year round, and especially hard to find when traveling.  What's more, as much as 20-30% of hay can end up as waste.  When fed as directed, Purina Equine Adult horse feed contains all the high-quality forage your horse needs."

If you've been feeding either Horse Chow 100 or the original Equine Adult, both of which are now discontinued, you will want to give your horse about a week to transition slowly to the new Equine Adult formula to prevent chance of digestive upset.

*New feed tag regulations state that feeds labeled "low starch" or "low sugar" must include guaranteed maximum content of starch and sugars on the tag.  This was not required in previous years due to insufficient reliability of testing procedures, but new testing technology available today allows for more consistent results, thereby justifying the guarantee on the tags.  Tag requirements vary from state to state.
It should be also noted that for special needs horses, such as those with Cushing's, insulin resistance, or Equine Metabolic Syndrome, the recommended max NSC intake is 10-12%.  For more information and comparison of NSC in Purina's horse feeds, go to http://purinamills.com/animal-nutrition-information/articles/horses/starch,sugars,fat,and-calories-in-diets/ .
